Nervous?
“The planet is developing a nervous system.” What a marvelous idea! What if everybody began thinking about the human species as a Part of the planet? The nervous system! And we are here to take care of it, not the other way around. The nervous system regulates an organism’s perception of the world and what is going on with its body. It manages the body’s responses to internal and external stimuli. Maybe our “purpose” (although that goes entirely against Daniel Dennett’s terminology) is to figure out what is going on with the body (Earth) and work to maintain homeostasis. If we provided the functions to the Earth that our biological systems provide for us, then it would become a working system, with each trying to ensure the survival of the other.
